AI paraphrasing workflow: from raw text to publishable draft
Paraphrasing is the most misused AI workflow. Done well, it speeds up writing by 5x. Done badly, it produces text that reads like a translation of a translation. Here's the workflow that works.
Step 1 — Decide the mode before you paste
Standard, fluency, formal, simple, academic, creative. Picking the mode up front prevents the most common failure: a single prompt asked to do five jobs at once.
Step 2 — Paraphrase in chunks, not pages
Process 200–400 words at a time. Long inputs cause models to compress, drift tone, or invent transitions. Short chunks preserve structure and let you review faster.
Step 3 — Humanize and voice-match
Run a second pass that asks for your voice using a sample. Replace any sentence with an em-dash cliche, a "moreover", or a "in today's fast-paced world." Read it out loud — the ear catches AI rhythm better than the eye.
Step 4 — Save the chain
Standard rewrite → humanize → voice match → save to project. Once it's a chain, your next article starts already three steps deep.

Is AI paraphrasing the same as spinning?
No. Spinning swaps synonyms and breaks meaning. Modern paraphrasing rewrites at the sentence level while preserving intent — closer to editing than rewording.
Will AI-paraphrased text be flagged as AI?
It can be if you stop at the first draft. Pair paraphrasing with a humanize pass and a voice-matching step, then read it aloud before publishing.
When should I paraphrase vs. rewrite from scratch?
Paraphrase when the structure works but the language is weak. Rewrite when the argument or angle is the problem. Most writers paraphrase too much and restructure too little.
Can I paraphrase research material legally?
Paraphrasing doesn't remove the citation requirement. Always credit the original source, even if no exact wording remains.
What's the right paraphrasing length ratio?
Aim for 0.9–1.1x the original length. Big swings usually mean the tool is summarizing or padding rather than paraphrasing.
